https://www.debian.org/intro/about

The Debian Project is an organization of individuals and leaders behind the development and support of Debian, an open source operating system based on the Linux kernel. The project was started in 1993 by Ian Murdock, and over time, the project was handed over to several different leaders. The time the project started, it was the only Linux distribution that was open to contribution for everyone, now there are hundreds of developers around the world are actively collaborating in this project.

At present the Debian Project Association is supported by the non-profit organization, which is called Software in the Public Interest (SPI), while the time of intial release it was sponsored by the Free Software Foundation.
